12 Days of Christmas – Day 4 – Where the Hell is Arika?!

I still haven’t gotten used to the feeling of a manga I’ve been reading suddenly coming to an end. I know lots of popular series that have ended this year, like Bakuman, REBORN, Zetsubou Sensei or Air Gear, among many others. Of those I’m reading, only three came to an end in 2012, and I don’t think any of them felt like the traditional ending of a manga. I knew Bokura ga Ita would be ending long before I got caught up, and BARRAGE didn’t last long enough to have the proper impact. Of course the big finale that happened this year, and the one I wanted to briefly touch on one last time, is the ending of Mahou Sensei Negima. Read the rest of this entry

Soul Eater – The Gathering Storm

Soul Eater 100

Maka is slowly turning into something out of Touhou.

With Maka and crew finally making their way to the moon, Kidd’s team returning after meeting up with the society of witches, Crona having traveled here to find the Kishin, and Excalibur doing something somewhere, the conditions of this arc are quickly turning into something very much like a final battle. I knew this whole encounter on the moon would be very important in the grand scheme of things, but since Maka and Crona were away from that battle, it was difficult to imagine this as anything conclusive. Now things are slowly resembling a scenario I’ve seen several times before at the ends of shonen, which is where every available character gathers in one location to brawl until one side runs out of guys. One Piece – Breaking The Law

“No, I will NOT form Big Emperor with you people!”

I’ve been doing a little thinking about the distant future of One Piece. Most of what I’ve realized is that there’s very little about the end of the manga that can be guessed at this point. Everyone has their own little theory about what the titular treasure will turn out to be, but I’m still pretty sure we won’t be able to guess it until five minutes before the treasure is found. It’ll be the sort of thing that won’t make any sense until then. The main point of my thinking, then, is that I have a rough theory as to how the overall story will progress. We’re all sure the series will end with Luffy becoming Pirate King, right? Well for that to happen, he has to reach the level of one of the Yonkou first. How is he going to do that? One Piece – Wild Mass Speculation

One Piece 658

Almost makes you wonder how bad their aim has to be.

As readers of manga, or whatever your chosen hobby is, we all have a habit of trying to out-predict the creator. Our minds wander and we wonder what will happen next, even if we know next to nothing about the event we’re thinking of. Like everyone else, this happens to me all the time, although it varies a lot depending on the series. The one I mostly try to predict is Liar Game because I can easily understand the logic that goes into it. With One Piece, on the other hand, I’m actually not as speculative. With all the ridiculous things that happen in this manga, it’s often hard to find the urge to try and guess anything. Read the rest of this entry

Mahou Sensei Negima – The Calm Before The End

Much better than a clip show.

Here I was thinking that Bokura ga Ita was the only series of mine to be ending. It’s an empty feeling when you suddenly learn a story you really like is about to end. I don’t even remember the first place I learned about it, but I do know I checked five different sites just to make absolutely sure it’s true. I mean, how the hell could you end a series like this in four chapters? There’s still too much that needs to be dealt with!

There are a few rumours I’ve heard that the series will have a sequel released after this one finishes. Considering the news that Ken Akamatsu’s contract with Kodansha is set to expire around when the final chapter gets released, this doesn’t surprise me. It wouldn’t be the first time a series concluded and started up in another magazine. If that’s what we get, though, I just hope it doesn’t take the To Love-Ru approach and slowly turn into softcore porn. Read the rest of this entry
