Invasion! Squid Girl – Review

I keep referring to the series as Squid Girl and the character as Ika Musume. Is that weird?

I’m a little more nervous about this video than usual, both because it’s my first review made with Audacity and because I’m discussing a gag series. It’s difficult to come up with much to say about something like this, but I think I manage it fairly well all things considered. I really liked how well some of the pictures fit together in particular.

Yotsuba&! – Reach Out And Pet The Tiger

Yotsubato 77

Not very talkative.

Some of my favourite chapters in manga, and in shonen comedies in particular, are the ones that show the interactions of characters who don’t normally get much time together. Now while Toriko Torako has had time with Yotsuba before, it’s almost always with either Asagi or her father as well, so the atmosphere is very different now. She was always the quiet, stoic type of character, which I suspect is why there have been so few scenes of her with only one other person. You can’t really get a good dialogue going when only one person is talking. Read the rest of this entry

Invasion! Squid Girl – Chapter 186

Squid Girl 186

Not Recommended: Shojo haters, anyone who enjoys long jogs by the beach

I think it goes without saying that most comedy manga, if not most media in general, have a romantic element put in. Maybe it’s for the added ratings, maybe it’s the size of the cast or any other reason. Since I read comedies like Hayate and Yandere Kanojo which have a big focus on romance, the scenes in Squid Girl that focus on it seem small by comparison. But having small romantic subtext is far from having none at all, and I’ve noticed a surprising number of different pairs in this series. Read the rest of this entry

Invasion! Squid Girl – Chapter 180

IkaMusume180

Art imitates life.

Is anyone else annoyed by characters in comedies with only one real personality trait? All their actions are focused around something, and it can quickly get tiresome seeing them do that same thing over and over again. I actually didn’t mind Sanae at first, but after a while, it became pretty obvious that she only had one joke going for her. Not only has virtually everything she’s done focused around her love for Ika Musume, but if anything, it’s been getting more extreme over time. From everything I’ve read, her only traits unrelated to Ika are her dog Alex and, oddly, the fact that she’s constantly in possession of large sums of money (is her family rich? I’ve seen her wave cash around at least four times now, but they never address it). You almost have to wonder what she was like before she met Ika. Read the rest of this entry

Bleach – Chapter 464

You could only make those terrible drawings for so long before it came back to haunt you.

I’m going to tell you a theory I’ve had lately. It’s going to sound a little strange, considering that this series is mainly known for its sword fights, but I think that Bleach works far better as a comedy than it does as an action series. Read the rest of this entry
