12 Days of Christmas – Day 6 – Honor Thyself and Thy Food

As you’re watching anime or reading manga, you will eventually come to a point that defies any attempt at explanation. Between your experience with and knowledge of the series, the intensity of the events and how everything can come together, there is no easy way to summarize what the series has made you feel.

So I’ve decided to present the following to you without any further explanation or context. There’s really nothing more I can say.

Rosario + Vampire – Breaking the Game Breaker

Rosario + Vampire 55

Exactly how many levels of crazy does this woman have?

Shuzen Akuha is one of the few characters I know where I find it hard to tell if we’re supposed to sympathize with her or not. Her entire motivation seems to be getting close to her adoptive sister Moka, but she’s willing to slaughter people and erase Moka’s dominant personality to do it. This would make sense if it looked like she had some sort of yandere complex, but her lines and artwork don’t get that across. I’m curious what those of you who haven’t read this chapter think of her from the above page. She’s drawn and written like a normal girl about to break down from the stress of life, but even that doesn’t make as much sense when you look at her recent actions. Remember that just a few chapters ago she was the one who tried to cut Kurumu in half, and it’s doubtful we’re supposed to have forgotten that already.  Read the rest of this entry

Mahou Sensei Negima – Chapter 343

Negima343

I'm not sure which part of this image to explain first...

So there I was, reading the latest chapter of Negima and getting ready to write a post about the way fighting is portrayed in it when something else caught my eye. The last chapter hinted at Asuna and Negi coming up with a concrete plan to defeat Evangeline in a fight. It turned out there was no real plan, but that didn’t stop them from kicking an enormous amount of ass. I know it has nothing to do with what I’m about to discuss, but let me just say that the shot of the two of them frozen in a crystal of ice, both smiling because they’re just that confident they’ll escape, is the sort of thing that made me fall in love with this manga.

So the fight goes on for a bit longer, and just when I’m wondering how long a training fight can last for, Negi accidentally strips both Asuna and Eva naked. Yup. I thought Negi’s sneeze from a few chapters ago was just a call back to the early chapters, but it turns out I was wrong. A big, badass fight scene getting interrupted by gratuitous fanservice, and there’s only one thought that comes to mind.

Why am I not bothered by this?

Rosario + Vampire II – Chapter 45

RosarioVampire45

A friend told me you had to be masochistic to play Touhou. I don't think this is what he meant.

There’s something that I’ve seen in a lot of different shonen series, and that’s the part where everyone pairs off one at a time to fight. I think we all know that routine by now, since so many manga rely on it to give the cast something to do. But I never expected to see it happen in Rosario + Vampire. I suppose I’ve been listening too much to the people who only know about the anime, which never grew up the way the manga did. The thing is that even during Part II, the series never felt like a traditional shonen, since the fight scenes were never the primary conflict; they were just the result of it. So we never got too many characters who appeared solely to be fought. If we did have those sorts of events more often, though, I think these chapters would feel very grating and unnecessary. But instead, I’m looking forward to these fights, since we haven’t had many good opportunities to see the cast in action yet. Read the rest of this entry

Black Cat – Review

I’ve been waiting to do this for months, and the day I complete it, Mayoi Neko Overrun gets canceled. Huh. I guess overall, it didn’t affect much, but it’s still an odd thing to think about.

This is my first review, and I’ll be honest and say it isn’t the best. I mostly made it to see what a finished Youtube/Blip video would look and sound like so I would know what to fix. Already I can see problems with the microphone feedback (you may want to lower the volume), and Windows Movie Maker is not the best program to make manga reviews in. I should have After Effects for the next video.
