Fairy Tail – Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

Fairy Tail 272

I'd show the actual conclusion, but I can't bear to look at it again, so here's some fanservice.

I am not an easy person to piss off. It really takes a lot of concentrated effort to get me to hate something. But there is one thing that has always and will always get me angry, and that’s when a series makes it look like it has gotten better, then proving that it hasn’t. The best example of this is actually from this very series a few months ago, when they actually addressed my question of how Lucy’s summon spirits were affected by the timeskip. I was briefly impressed that it actually looked into that…and then they used it as an excuse to cut off the training arc. Dammit, my ideas should never be used for evil. Somehow, though, Fairy Tail has managed to top itself.

Current Manga Rankings – 2011 – Part 1

I started reading manga a few years ago, and in that length of time I’ve acquired a surprising number of ongoing series. They have quite a bit of variety to them, from shonen to josei, weekly to whenever-the-hell-it-feels-like. I’ve had the chance to talk about quite a few of these series, and even reviewed some of them already. Since it’s the end of the year, though, I thought I would take the opportunity to rank all of my ongoing manga. This way I can discuss some series I couldn’t before, and I can state which manga I like the most and why.

30. Bleach

Here’s the thing about Bleach: it’s the one series on this list that I never read the old chapters for. It’s not something I would do by choice, but then again, I never really intended to start reading Bleach at all. One day I heard that the manga would be showing Gin’s bankai, so I read that chapter to see it and just didn’t stop. That’s a big part of why I find it so hard to get mad at this series. It takes a good deal of effort to feel anything towards it, really. I’ve been told that not caring about something is one of the cruelest things you can do to it, and that’s why it gets the lowest spot on this list. Read the rest of this entry

Fairy Tail – Chapter 261

Fairy Tail 261

I could have selected a more suitable image. I chose not to.

Here we find ourselves in the middle of a training arc. It’s something we haven’t actually seen from Fairy Tail yet, which is more than a little surprising. You would have expected a series that’s primarily about the daily lives of an adventurer guild to spend some time on their combat preparation. Hell, the last arc dealt with the S-Class Exam, which sounds like something you’d do a little training for. But now everyone has been warped into the future, and they need to get their strength back up to compete with the other guilds. I would spend some time talking about the bizarre choice of splitting up the time skip and the training arc when they could have been done simultaneously, but I think everyone who reads this series already knows all about that. Moving seven years ahead was a poor choice in general, and while a part of me still thinks there was a point to it, it hasn’t done a good job at proving that. Read the rest of this entry

Fairy Tail – Chapter 258

FairyTail258

Okay seriously, who comes up with these names?

Here’s a recurring scenario in shonen: the main hero has a special power which, at first, seems to be unique to him, but we soon discover dozens of other characters like him. Like in One Piece, where there were only three Devil Fruit users in the first hundred or so chapters, but now they’re everywhere. When you think of it like that, it’s actually very intriguing that we haven’t seen many Dragon Slayers in Fairy Tail. In over 250 chapters, we’ve only come across 5 of them, and I think Laxus and Cobra are supposed to be some bizarre new version of them. Fairy Tail – Chapter 253

THIS is how you lead into a time skip!

Um…okay…not sure where to start. I guess I’ll should start with the previous chapter, which I considered writing an entry about, but then wisely decided to wait for this week. I’d been expecting the guild leader, Makarov, to die by the end of this storyline, and I suspect most readers have as well. When he stayed behind to hold off Acnologia, I was sure that this would finally be his time, as he sacrifices himself so the guild may continue on. But since it hadn’t happened yet, I waited for this chapter to say anything. With this chapter…I don’t know anymore. Maybe the reaper held back because he was just as confused as we are.
